It is interesting to note, however, that this view of youth is a relatively recent one – indeed, it is arguably one of the hallmarks of modernity in the Western world. Many still-pervasive ideas about youth grew out of psychology, anthropology and sociology, fields that came fully to the fore in the twentieth century, thanks to such prominent practitioners as G. Stanley Hall, Margaret Mead, Erik H. Erikson and Jean Piaget. But the term is heavily value-laden and is often used to elevate print at the expense of other forms of communication. In PhotoGraphic Encounters, the authors challenge this reductive notion of literacy and propose instead an integrated span of literacies: reaching across disciplinary boundaries to discover a text that draws upon both the visual and the verbal. PhotoGraphic Encounters discusses Canadian writers like Margaret Atwood, George Bowering, Robert Kroetsch, and Daphne Marlatt, and Canadian artists like Fred Douglas, Ernie Kroeger, Brenda Pelkey, and Michael Snow, then looks at the cross-fertilization of visual and verbal processes in their works. The authors present a new narrative practice, one that fully engages lived experience. The vernacular, they argue, is vital to our participation as readers and viewers of high art. Making the connection between the vernacular and high culture creates an enabling moment in artistic production and reception and in teaching, learning, and talking about art and literature. PhotoGraphic Encounters offers a compelling perspective on questions of literacy in a postmodern culture. Artists, writers, scholars, and critics alike will want this volume in their libraries. Working from the shared premise that multiple modernities exist for Indigenous peoples, the authors seek to understand contemporary musical expression from Native perspectives and to decolonize the study of Native American\/First Nations music. The essays coalesce around four main themes: innovative technology, identity formation and self-representation, political activism, and translocal musical exchange. Closely related topics include cosmopolitanism, hybridity, alliance studies, code-switching, and ontologies of sound. Made from cutting, stitching, and layering textiles, the two-dimensional figures in Henry’s work are often grouped into compositions which reveal notions of gender, family, and community. These compelling compositions are drawn from multiple references, including the artist’s own memories, her collection of West African masks, or events from television. Imbued with Henry’s perspective as an African American woman, the figures assert themselves as timeless witnesses reflecting a variety of personal and social histories.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Alicia Henry","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":40419684122678,"sku":"ALI01","price":25.0,"currency_code":"CAD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0555\/8619\/3462\/products\/image_3c8d7999-2c8b-4211-a7fe-80c08a028cda.jpg?v=1666395247"}],"url":"https:\/\/thegallerystore.ca\/collections\/books-1.oembed?page=2","provider":"Kamloops Art Gallery","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
