Yoko Takashima's practice has become known for its unusual and evocative presentations of ordinary moments from everyday life. In the two exhibitions documented here, Familii Front, shown at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery in March 2002, and Bound, at the Kamloops Art Gallery in December 2002, Takashima explores parenting in today's complex and uncertain world. She examines the degree to which feelings of anxiety and vulnerability escalate after the birth of a child.
Mowry Baden's thoughtful essay eloquently addresses the constituent elements of Takashima's œuvre: the use of good-natured humour, the startling juxtaposition of customary with manipulated images, which creates a dialogue integrating technology with the everyday, and the confrontation between cultural differences as the artist's Japanese heritage meets her Western reality.
