Alaska Variations is the soundtrack to the 3 channel video installation by Paul Walde, which was conceived as an album of performative sound and music compositions responding to the Alaskan landscape and elements within it. The scores combine scientific experimentation and observation with experimental sound and music practices and were written as a combination of instructional texts, standard music notation, and graphic notation. The performances of these scores were captured as a series of audio and video recordings which when shown in combination with each other, form a larger portrait of the landscape around Anchorage, Alaska.
There are eleven works in the installation of which the Glen Alps Variations and Gnaw XI appear in their entirety on this recording. Excerpts from Ice Record, All Terrain, Dance 1, and 5 Planes round out this collection.
Alaska Variations was undertaken at the invitation of the Anchorage Museum as part of their Polar Lab residency. Following a preliminary visit in 2015, all the works in the collection were completed during a month long residency in February 2016.
