When the Showa era began, Mizuki himself was just a few years old, so his earliest memories coincide with the earliest events of the time. With his trusty narrator Rat Man, Mizuki brings history into the realm of the personal, making it palatable, and indeed compelling, for young audiences as well as more mature readers.

Mizuki's Showa 1944-1953 continues from where the last novel left off; straight into World War II. As the war progresses, Japan and the United States become officially enemies following the attack on Pearl Harbour. Across small islands in the Pacific Japan slowly loses ground to the USA when they finally release the most deadly weapon yet, the atomic bomb. The fallout is never ending and Mizuki has to face the wars results while coming to terms with the loss of his left arm. This novel is an intense condemnation of war and features Mizuki’s internal strife with himself and the world.
